About The Artwork

Oil pastels on fine art paper, surreal setting inspired by The Beatles album's cover Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Interesting aspect in this piece is that, in spite of my love for portraits, the human faces are not detailed at all, they more look like ghosts and lost souls. The rest of the artwork is full of symbols and archetypical figures.

Drawing, the gesture of leaving marks on a surface, has always been the greatest form of visual expression to me. I took part in many collective and solo exhibitions in both Italy and UK. Studying art history, particularly those artists who have dealt with the human body and face, I have been very interested in the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch, Francis Bacon. My work is mostly orientated on portraits. The research I do leads me to a sort of crossroads: the classic “ideal beauty” charcoal drawing on paper on a hand, the modern abuse and coldness of the human body image on the other. The use of charcoal and paper has a symbolic value of "reuniting elements", as both are unnatural evolutions of wood. The versatility of this medium also allows me to get delicate shadings and primitive signs at the same time, all in favour of expressiveness. An exaggerated expressiveness that has the aim of intriguing and involving the observer.
