"Loïs Mailou Jones" Oil pastel, gouache, oil paint and coloured pencil on paper 210 x 148mm 2020 Signed and dated on verso This mini portrait is a tribute, celebrating the life works of artist, Loïs Mailou Jones. The other purpose to this project is to continue raising awareness of diversity and gender within the art industry. Lois Mailou Jones is an inspirational American artist and textile designer. Born November 3, 1905 and died June 9, 1998. She started her career in textile design, working as a freelance textile designer for companies such as: Foster Company in Boston and Schumacher Company in New York. In 1928 she created a set of prints for Cretonne fabric, that were inspired by Caribbean palms, plants and wildlife, drawing out the caribbean-esque colours of yellows, green and orange. Lois took many trips to African nations and to Haiti, gathering inspiration for her artwork. She kept journals, took photographs and documented her findings into sketches and writings. She has more than 75 boxes of material dating back to the early 1900’s of research from her trips. A blog on NMWA Exhibitions that features an article about Jones's work says, “a testament to the life and career of a tireless advocate for African American art, an experimental and innovative thinker, and a true artistic pioneer”. All Erin’s art is about reflecting sub-cultures from the past and today and drawing portraits of people that tell a story. She draws all her illustrations in her pastel naive art style and calls her portraits, “Pastel people”. Artwork is wrapped in a cello sleeve and shipped in protective packaging.
