About The Artwork

This piece is from my 'Beatitude' series where I favour the mid-tones and atmospheric effects of graphite, ink and colour pencils with some muted applications of acrylic. Like much of this series, this piece is an exploration of female sensuality and the desire to express it. The figures exist in a liminal space -other worldly- caught between light and shadow in a perpetual dance with nature. Rapture or adversity may come from outside forces or they may come from within, but a providential influence helps bring light from the shadows. As a Malaysian woman artist of Portuguese and Sri-Lankan descent, my early sensibilities were influenced by iconic images from the church going tradition I grew up in. Later in life, while living in Japan, l was drawn to Japanese Ukiyo-e and Sumi-e. This interest expanded through my explorations and travels, to include other Asian artistic traditions, like Moghul art, favouring line and decorative detail. These are some of the influences that have informed my artistic choices, not always immediately apparent in my works in other series, but very much discernible with this 'Beatitudes' series, where I have utilised line and some decorative detail to convey a sentiment or feeling. This series has been ongoing for years. The first in this series was in 1992, done in pencil on paper. I have since revisited this series over the years, even while working on other series, and experimented with different media and materials to further develop what essentially started out as smaller pencil drawings on paper. "Love in a Penumbra" is a mixed media piece done in graphite, ink, colour pencils and acrylic on canvas.

I am an artist from Malaysia, residing in Kuala Lumpur. I grew up in the Portuguese enclave in Malacca, where iconic images and music from church choir would contribute to my early sense of aesthetics. Later, after moving to Japan, I would draw inspiration from the Japanese aesthetic concepts of wabi, sabi and yugen. I am also attracted to the use of colour in Japanese Hanga prints and Sumi-e ink paintings, ranging from flat colour applications to stormy monochromatic tones. While I have undeniably been captivated by a broader range of artistic expression from different cultures, my Portuguese Malaysian roots indelibly imbued my sensibilities with qualities inherent in iconographic imagery and also reverent hymnal timbres. I am affected by the haunting simplicity of plainchant and the inflections of modern poetry. These sources of inspiration, together with my involvement in music as a singer songwriter, continue to drive me as an artist. I work in various media: pastels, acrylics, graphite, charcoal, and oil. My pieces are primarily two dimensional and figurative, a celebration of the human form, presenting as lithe and gender ambiguous personages, in surreal and liminal states.
