About The Artwork

This drawing is part of a collection of drawings I made for my later Exhibition: " Hélène's Bestiarium" Hélène's Bestiary is a collection of drawings in pencil with a hint of watercolor and gouache of real animals with a strange almost cartoonish or extraterrestrial appearance. The animals themselves are already alienating, but the work in Hélène's Bestiary is made even more puzzling by the additional figures and by placing the animals in an inner space. A bestiary (pl. Bestiaria) is first and foremost a medieval, often illuminated manuscript, in which all kinds of mythical animals, real animals, plants, stones and fabulous human races are discussed - presented as real. It is often a hodgepodge of surviving eyewitness accounts and (Christian) metaphors. The texts were originally dedicated to animals. Bestiaria are very old. The oldest known originated in the 2nd century and probably in Alexandria, but comes from an even older source. In a broader sense, a bestiary is an encyclopedia of fantasy creatures, at this time mostly based on fantasy worlds from fantasy literature, fantastic (computer) games or role playing games. Hélène's work is influenced by contemporary SF elements which can also be found in her bestiary.

Who is Imaginary Constructs? Humor, a beautiful picture, a good story, a brilliant idea and humor or did I already mention that? Inspiration? A beautiful picture, a good story, a joke and penguins. I make both drawings and paintings, mainly in acrylics. Also, once in a while I dabble in 3D although my main interest really lies with drawing. I am currently working on a series of collages. Have fun! Helene Koopmans
