About The Artwork

‘Novus Ordo Seclorum’ (New World Order); original hand drawn Sakura ink drawing mounted on wooden canvas 30” x 40”. The piece is inspired by Hesiod’s poem ‘Theogony’. The poem gives a prominent place to the goddess Styx, implicating her in the theme of Zeus’ rise to power. In this poem, which covers the genesis of the gods and universe, Styx and the power she represents (the oath), are fundamental to understanding Hesiod’s message about the basic laws of the cosmos and creation of society. Hesiod maps the physical cosmos and creates a framework around the climactic events surrounding Zeus’ birth and conquest of the Titans. The goddess’s presence at these key moments dispels chaos by establishing distinct political and topographical structures, which are the key features of Zeus’ continuing reign and exist as long as her boundaries remain intact. Styx emphasises the distinct physicality of the new world ruled by Zeus, in which abstract ideas are expressed in real space and time, which have boundaries and markers, firmly establishing a chaotic “before” and an ordered “after.”

Catherine is a mostly self-taught artist based in Westminster, London. After a brief spell attending art school she later studied law through London School of Law, and later for a MA in philosophy. Catherine remains a devoted artist, creating complex and detailed surreal drawings, often expansive. Her specialism is fine ink drawing, from which she occasionally develops digital adaptations. Catherine's inspiration derives from the philosophy of aesthetics, a combination of dreams from her collective subconscious, 'sacred geometry' in nature and esoteric principles from the period of late antiquity.
