ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Stuart Lehrman has described his art-making process as kinesthetic. A constant balance is between “addition and subtraction, making and unmaking.” He enjoys toeing the line between order and chaos, always experimenting with paint as a medium and finding new ways to manipulate texture, pigment, form, shape, and space. His process involves a great deal of unlearning as well as relearning the universal language of natural and manmade phenomena he observes in the world around him and the historical context of my work is that of Abstract Michael Cagno Executive Director - The Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton University The Portal Series has percolated in my mind for a long time, originally focused on the idea of a “nest”.  When I started drawing it morphed into something with broader meanings, including entry into a void, the eye the passageway into the soul, of course, a "nest' from one stage of life to another.

My practice involves the dialogue between order and chaos. The process is a constant experiment with the physical properties of the materials I am working with-moving between addition and subtraction, making and unmaking. The art is made up of (mistakes or happy accidents) during the process, but these ‘mistakes’ are useful to make because they may lead little by little I hope to the small truths. My work is inspired by the natural and man-made phenomena I observe in the world around me. The Portal Series has percolated in my mind for a long time, originally focused on the idea of a “nest”. When I started drawing it morphed into something with broader meanings, including entry into a void, the eye the passageway into the soul, of course, a "nest' from one stage of life to another. My Road Rage photography series tackles these same problems and attempts to capture this same dynamic, through the lens of the camera. While out on the streets, I am always on the lookout for ambiguous accidents of beauty and power, ground into the common pavement.
