About The Artwork
Queen Hatshepsut was only the third woman to become pharaoh in 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian history, and the first to attain the full power of the position. Cleopatra, who also exercised such power, would rule some 14 centuries later. I created this piece using a red ballpoint pen on the back of a CDC title 15 cover. The application of pressure in certain areas is how I achieved a contrast between tone and shade. I chose this subject for her exemplification of strength and change during a time of antiquity where only male influence was allowed to hold the position of Pharaoh.
