ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I always try to bring what I paint or draw ‘to the surface’, to contradict the illusion of depth and spaciousness. This can be done by leaving the brush strokes or pencil hatching completely visible as what they are - brush strokes and hatchings. And by preventing too many perspective depth effects. A painting or drawing must be nothing but what it is: marks on a flat surface. Boring? On the contrary: herein lies the magic. They are not the illusion of life. They ARE life. Those marks are the story of what my eye saw and my brain experienced in that time I entered them as code into my log, wrote them down as directions on a map. A route into unknown land on a shoulder, the hand carved path along a cheek bone.
