About The Artwork

In this piece of work, I explored beauty of black color based on grahpite pencil. Generally, black has been as associated with emptiness and nothingness. However, I want to suggest that black is a colour that has various shades. Black absorbs every other colour, so it can change depending on other colours. Black can be warm, neutral, or cold. However, black never loses its characteristics like other colours. No matter which colours we mix with black, it always remains black. For me, black is like a container of other colours. The unconscious system of the human mind is like a mixture including black. We experience various emotional states every day. In fact, the human mind is like a mixture of various emotions, and we can absorb all emotions. Furthermore, we can pretend that we have nothing in our minds, which resemble black, like nothingness. However, if we observe the colour black more closely, we can recognise all of the colours within it. Likewise, if we observe a person’s mind closely, we can feel the array of emotional states inside it.

Jione Choi has built a practice based upon memories - how they appear and disappear. Through intangible, memories can act as mechanisms through which we see the world. Choi's paintings express this fluid sense of ethereality, recalling past and present at once. The artist is from Seoul and is based in London, where she gained an MFA from Slade School of Fine Art in 2019. After graduating the school, she got the Global talent visa (Tier1) to live as an artist based in London. In 2021, She won the second prize in Le Franc 300th anniversary oil painting competition held in South Korea and she also selected as a shortlisted artist of the ‘Ruthborchard self-portrait award’ and ‘ Artist of the year’ organized by Artist Lounge. She has selected as a part of Rising Star Report 2019 created by Saatchi Art, and she was one of the three finalists of Marshwood arts award 2019 in Painting and Drawing category.
