About The Artwork

As an artist my hands are my main tools of expression. Over recent months I have become more focused upon the story behind expressions that my hands may portray. I chose to create these recent works in charcoal because of several key factors. Primarily because of the direct contact between my hands, without the use of brushes or pens, with all aspects of the work. The charcoal covers the hands as they draw, every element of texture on the fingertips creating nuanced marks, that sculpt and draw the powdered material over the paper, the paper texture itself becoming the record of each expression and movement of the hands. For me as the artist this drawing expresses both my inner strength as an artist and my vulnerability. One hand cradles and supports the other. Each hand individually showing expression, age, and life within it.

Born and educated in the UK, a passionate artist since a child, I initially trained as an Interior Designer. After a successful career, I retrained in ceramics completing 7 years full time study at the Universities of Bristol and Cardiff. As an artist my main focus is on the creation of figuratively based ceramic sculptures. My artworks explore the complexities and variants of gender identity, through the expressions of gesture, posture and movement. Symbolic images of protective armour, clothing and the use of multiple layers are often central to many of my artworks. My artworks are created in both porcelain and stoneware paperclay. The combined use of these materials enable the creation of larger artworks that are constructed using thin layers of clay. I mainly use hand-building and free form sculpting techniques. I work from my studios in the South West of France. My artworks have been exhibited widely, and they are in collections throughout the UK, USA, Holland, Germany and within France.
