About The Artwork

During my staying as artist in residence in Ballycastle, Mayo Ireland, I started playing again with drawing and painting materials. In the serial ‘Traces and Shadows’ I was playing in layers. It started with a drawing of some nature impression or it started with just dripping the paint. In the following layers I catched shadows of the sun playing through leaves from trees or plants. And so on. When I begin I don’t know where the artwork leads me to. It is a pleasant adventure. Because I want to change the materials to work on, this serial is made on prepared wood instead of paper wich gives the extra structures of the wood. Each artwork of this serial has a different background color, in this case very light blue.

Monique van Stokkum (1952) is a Dutch artist. Currently she makes drawings. THE DELICATE LINE Since 2015 I make drawings again. In the beginning of my artist careeer I started with drawing (ca. 1975), then a period of painting followed . And now I'm back to my old love. The directness, grim, tenderness and strength of the drawing. THEME Of course I am touched by what is happening in the world. In my work I do not react literally on the world news. Yet it is about universal themes in which people can recognize themselves. The viewer looks for elements of life. My work gets meaning through their associations and fantasies. Landscapes, animals and people are my sources of inspiration. Not strange for someone who is born and raised in the woods. I can now say that the death of my son (2005) brought about major changes in my work. Now, after more than 10 years, I feel the space again which was not there for a long time. Since 2013 I make my Objects to Remember. Large and small painted objects in wich memories may be stored. Works of art with an extra personal significance.
