About The Artwork

Zitkala-Sa (1876 - 1938)  Zitkala-Sa was a Sioux writer, musician, and political activist. She wrote the first Native American opera (The Sun Dance) as well as numerous books recalling traditional Native American stories as well as chronicles of her upbringing in which she was pulled back and forth between a dominant American culture that wanted her to assimilate and the one she was born into. She also founded, in 1926, the National Council of American Indians, an organization which lobbies on behalf of Native American rights.   This is a pencil drawn illustration that I created for a group show entitled "Mujeres X Mujeres" here in Buenos Aires with two of my illustrator friends Andrea Toledo and Jésica Cichero. Measures 12 cm x 15 cm, drawn with Faber-Castell pencils on acid free paper.
