This is part of my collection of the 20th century icons using my technique: lacquered metallic nails on a painted wooden plate. The nails were manually installed one by one. There is about 4200 nails on this piece. I can replicate this technique using a photo portrait of anyone. From all the 20th century political leaders, Nelson Mandela was the one that I admire most. Living in a segregated and deeply racist country, where a minority dominated and humiliated a native majority, Nelson Mandela fought as he could. Politically, diplomatically and given no alternatives, with conspiracy and sabotage. Always for a society where any kind of domination should not prevail. No matter the skin color of the dominant and the dominated. After serving 27 years in a jail, when released, he became the president of his country. When the most expected would be a revenge against his oppressor, he only fought about the same: for a society without oppression, regardless the race. And then all the communities could live together with dignity and reciprocal respect.
