About The Artwork

A certain type of calf called Apis, were at first celebrated as holy creatures, centuries later as Gods, as aspects of the sun slain and reborn. In Egypt, its cult endured around three thousand years, up to the ptholemaic era in wich Alexander the great tried to unite eastern and western traditions in a politic instrumentalization of cult, expecting to use familiar themes to embody a religious aspect of the new empire and society that he expected to found. His initiative was far less than successful. The egyptian view of the sacred calf contrasts with the mesopotamic and hellenic traditions that understood it as a sacrifice, and many times as a memento mori or an icon of frailty, being constantly depicted as the prey of lions, and offered as sacrifice to the gods, This work integrates original photographs taken in Alexandria, Egypt, depicting the shore of the city and a bronze sculpture of the Apis Bull placed in the catacombs of the ancient and legendary library of Alexandria (the archaeological place, not the wonderful modern library) and aims to reestablish it as an icon of rebirth, of light born anew from the depths.

Colombian born and based, My early memories and academic formation as a Historian and Art historian deeply influence my work, exploring time as a simultaneous continuum, in which past, present and future eternally coexist, I understand Myth as an ancient knowledge that seizes the spiritual and physical comprehension of the cosmos trough poetic language, and try to overlap it with the everyday experience, trying to make the ancient anew, and the present atemporal, taking advantage of both the artistic tradition and new technologies.
