About The Artwork

La Catrina is one of the symbols that most represents Mexico in the Day of the Dead festivities. It has its origins in 1912, it was created by the Mexican engraver and caricaturist José Guadalupe Posada in order to make fun of the social classes of the time. Posadas is the creator of the famous garbancera skull, which represented a criticism of domestic employees who tried to look like the upper-class maidens of the post-revolutionary era. Some time later it was painted by the muralist Diego Rivera in his mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Central Alameda", which is today in the historic center of Mexico City. La Catrina has been evolving a lot since the time of Posadas, currently La Catrina represents an entity full of status, grace and elegance. Every year it is represented countless times in films, paintings, songs, etc.; It is one of the most beautiful representations of Mexican traditions and one of the most prominent internationally.
