Coal Barge and climate Stripes Print

Part of a series addressing climate change 2020-2023, I became fascinated with cargo ships and their cargo, the energy use they represent. From there I moved to oil tankers and coal barges. All of these subjects represent the enormity of our dependence upon fossil fuel and our addiction to massive quantities of goods. When one actually sees a coal barge, heaped with MOUNTAINS of coal which dwarf the barge in size, it is a sobering vision. I represent this barge on a ground of stripes, based upon yearly average global temperatures for o er 100 years, from cool on the left to the red hot period we now live in. This system of mapping annual temperature averages with colored stripes was developed by lead scientist Ed Hawkins at the University of Reading, UK.
