ABOUT THE ARTWORK

‘Go’, Aluminium Dye Sublimation, 80 X 120 cm (32 X 48 inches), 2020. With the resumption of the hearings in his trial, the formerly Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was recently summoned to reappear before the Jerusalem District Court. This was another opportunity to call him to assume responsibility, resign and retire from all public activity. Until the elections and the establishment of a new government and notably a new Prime Minister in mid-2021, the most common slogan in Israel was 'לך' (pronounced 'Lech' in Hebrew), which means ‘Go’. You could have seen people protesting along the streets, at the crossroads and on the bridges with 'Go' posters and placards, megaphones and COVID-19 masks with the word 'Go' printed on them and countless 'Go' calls on the social media. For 3 years in the 1990s and from 2009 until 2021, Benjamin Netanyahu has served as Prime Minister of Israel, probably a good one. Things started to change since December 2016, when it was publicly unveiled that he is under investigation for corruption by the attorney general and the police. Morally, a significant share of the Israelis expected him to resign. Not only he did not do that, but consequently we have been flooded with heavy showers of hatred, physical and verbal violence, calls against the law and the law enforcement institutions, undermining the foundations of democracy as never before in Israel. This was the reason why so many Israelis protested and called Netanyahu to go and leave his position. I did not want to talk about him, neither to elaborate on his activities. I only wished to humbly add my voice to those calling ‘Go’, and to call it out loud in my artistic way, hoping that soon, peace, serenity and love will prevail among us Israelis anew…
