‘Loaf Rolling in Dough’, Aluminum Dye Sublimation, 100 X 150 cm (40 X 60 inches), 2019 According to a Worldbank report published in 2019, around 1 in 10 people live on less than the target figure of $1.25 per day. Poverty is more than the lack of income or resources: People live in poverty if they lack basic services such as healthcare, security, and education, while also experiencing hunger and social discrimination. The present artwork humbly tries to attract attention to this fact, and thus contributes its small share to the global effort to fight and cut world poverty. Dough is an English slang expression for money, and 'rolling in dough' locution means that one is wealthy. It seems that the underlying meaning is straightforward - if you have enough dough, you could literally roll in it. The lush breakfast scene which is arranged in front of us here, reflects a society which does not know what poverty is: even the loaf, which is made of dough and usually represents a very basic, inexpensive and daily food consumed by all, is turned to be filled with gold… My artworks are usually about uncanny compositions, featuring inconceivable, yet fantastic realities which are portrayed employing dazzling colors and razor-sharp details. These fantastic realities cannot happen in our real world but only within my mind and consequently in my computers, where they are conceived, designed, fashioned, textured, painted and finally photographed. In addition, I usually create my artworks by first producing a short footage around the painting's theme and then I choose one frame, which I later turn to be the final still artwork. The present painting is actually one frame that I have chosen among 250 frames that constitute the footage, and it seems to me that it fairly represents my artistic practice.
