Suburban Samurai was was born in Manchester England and educated at Art Schools in England and North America. Eventually gaining an MFA in Sculpture from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, CA. After spending time in Canada and NY he moved back to the UK and took up a career in computer animation, basing himself in Bristol. "With my background in Fine Art, CGI and Animation I am able to reference and embrace the principles of digital culture. However, I am also more than comfortable venturing beyond the confines of the computer screen, transitioning happily between digital and analogue, from the virtual to the physical world and back again." Skulls and Scrolls Skulls and Scrolls is a series of digital sculptures based on existing skull tattoos. "Ever since I was a child I have been attracted to tattoos and tattoo design. The act of tattooing itself, the desire to be permanently marked by the artist and the presence of the ink within the skin, are all fascinating to me. As a boy I watched transfixed as a class mate tattooed his own skin with a sewing needle and a pot of school ink. Over the years I have watched tattooing rise from the depths of the subcultural underground to become publicly acceptable, embraced by celebrity and popular culture alike. Being 'inked' nowadays has lost much of its countercultural associations, to the extent that tattooing is almost as acceptable as the type porcelain 'nicknack' found in many a suburban home. I grew up in such a suburban home, surrounded by my mothers porcelain objects. As a teenager I was both repelled by their sentimental charm and attracted to the reflections of the surface glaze and the colours lying, like tattoo ink, beneath. The Skulls and Scrolls series is a way for me to explore both these idioms and imagine a world where tattoo artists like Sailor Jerry, or Kat Von D, were let loose in the workshops of Meissen, Capodimonte and LLadro." Digital Sculpture and 3D Printing "My art is made by hand, with computers, using technology usually associated with the Film and Visual FX Industries. Currently my work exists outside of the computer as high quality 2D Giclee prints. Ultimately the goal is to see my work realised physically in porcelain, using 3D printing technology."
