The series: This series began as a meditation on the nature of nature, of the evolving convergence of biology and technology. My earlier subjects were more organic and explored aspects of bio-engineering, most seemed to imply a vague connection to plant or animal origins. Along the way, thoughts of how the infusion of artificial intelligence into the mix would influence future developments in this field began to move to the forefront. My more recent subjects have veered towards the mechanical, with the focus turning to the supposition of machine consciousness. So the goal at present is not so much to reveal that which may be manufactured in the lab, but instead explores the nature of being. Viewed through anthropomorphic filters of human existence, the present series seeks to explore the dream-state of these bio-mechanical entities. Half dreaming, not quite awake, not just yet. The technique: My process in the construction of hypothetical specimens/environments involve an interplay between analysis and invention. The process employed is an open-ended pursuit similar to automatic drawing, where one makes a mark and then responds to that. The ability to run various scenarios quickly in digital form makes experimentation in the computer environment much more advantageous in comparison to my older works, which were executed with oil paint. The unpredictable results of my investigations reflect a kind of randomness that is inherent in both scientific research and the natural processes. The resulting menagerie can be interpreted as expressions of evolutionary propositions; prototypes of hybrid generative systems influenced by man-made technologies.
