I draw with a stylus on my iPad and am influenced by many artists, including Matisse and Wayne Thiebaud. This painting invokes the phrase Goethe is supposed to have uttered on his deathbed, but also the title of Anthony Hecht's great poem about the Holocaust, which also speaks of Christian martyrs burned at the stake. My love for light and shadow, the play of light on glass and on water, is part of the meaning of the painting. Hopefully it will give a sense of calm to the viewer, as Matisse wanted art to do.
