Olympia, Hommage à Jacques Offenbach - Limited Edition of 25 Print

‘Olympia, Hommage à Jacques Offenbach’, Aluminium Dye Sublimation, 80 X 120 cm (32 X 48 inches), 2021. This work was conceived in July 2021, cruising at an altitude of about 11 km on my way to the west coast. I initially planned to stop first for a few days in Paris but then, realizing that the American authorities do not allow entry from Europe for non-Americans, I had to give up on Paris, but not on the abundance of memories and recollections it evokes in my mind. One of these were Jacques Offenbach’s 1881 opera ‘Les Contes d'Hoffmann’ (‘The Tales of Hoffmann’) and especially its first act, named after its protagonist – Olympia, an automated doll. Olympia was created by Spalanzani, a scientist who made it with mechanical parts, except for her human eyes which were provided by Coppélius, a mysterious optician. With this work of mine I am trying to reflect my own interpretation of the first act which is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 ‘Der Sandmann’ (‘The Sandman’). Hoffmann the poet is captured by Olympia’s beauty and falls in a passionate love with her. He refuses to recognize the fact that it is a mechanical doll and ignores all the clues and indications that prove him wrong. Coppélius equips him with magic glasses so that he perceives Olympia as a real woman.
