About The Artwork

I created this piece to go along with the cover of a book I wrote called Re-Creating Me: Master the Art of Your Identity. I combined an old portrait I drew of myself with a new one I painted this past year. I wanted to show that one doesn't have to just go on existing, but can create a new more colorful, satisfying version of themselves. I wanted to show we can re-create ourselves and live in newness of life and on purpose. This piece shows what became possible for me when I dug deeper, received healing, and lived with intention.

During some really difficult seasons and stages in my life, I started having visions of me being free that really gave me the desire to do whatever it would take to power through and fight for my freedom in those areas. I started a “Stages of Freedom” Collection as a result. In late 2007, I was at one of the lowest points in my life and found myself in an emergency room after downing enough aspirin to end my life prematurely. After being there for about 10 hours, my toxicity levels finally reached their peak and started going down. A dr. came in trying to shame me for my choice and asked if I felt stupid for what I had done while I sat there staring at the blank white walls and feeling utterly hopeless. At the time, I only wished I had thought of a better, more immediate plan of action. However, as I looked at the blank white walls, all I could picture was the girl in the rain painting I had painted only months before and realized this collection is meant to be bigger than myself and help others as well. It’s still not entirely complete, but I have every intention of proposing to put it in various places where people need hope and healing and wish for my art to help be a part of that process. I hope you will enjoy it as well as you take a look at it.
