Shadowplay IX aims to evoke a form of sympathy towards shapes, seeking a possible path to stillness. The work intends to illustrate that we can merely appreciate the properties of a shape, such as its outline, but we can never assess its true essence. Much like in introspection we reduce ourselves to shadows; blurring boundaries between ourselves and the ten thousand things. Shadowplay IX is particularly inspired by paintings of Morandi. Currently, the artist is using the aid of computers to generate and assess shapes and compositions. In this process, the work arises from a combination of algorithmic experimentation and graphical post-processing. First, vase-like shapes are produced as vector graphics by a mathematical algorithm that is developed by the artist. The aesthetic algorithm considers human preference for elegant forms as well as rhythm and symmetry in order to generate an endless set of well-formed compositions. From these output graphics the artist selects a few promising options for image post-processing. Then, the artist may further optimize the composition and apply the palette using a graphics suite software. Finally, the artist blurs the composition as to strive for a dynamic balance comprising color and form. One can wonder whether an ordinary process encapsulated by an algorithm can generate or even become a work of art. Interestingly, the development and usage of generative algorithms seems to sustain catalytic loops of creativity between the artist and his tools. To the artist, and hopefully to the viewer as well, the admiration of reality is strengthened by the virtual. Shadowplay IX is available in limited edition high-quality prints signed and numbered by the artist.

Background in technology and computer science. Fascinated by the fine arts all my life and have been drawing and painting since early age. Mainly interested in combining technology and art. For example, I am using the aid of computers to generate and assess shapes and compositions. Sometimes I combine that with traditional painting as well as experimental patination. One can wonder whether an ordinary process encapsulated by an algorithm can generate or even become a work of art. Interestingly, the development and usage of generative algorithms seems to sustain catalytic loops of creativity between the artist and his tools.
