About The Artwork

‘Sous le Ciel de Paris, Hommage à Georges-Eugène Haussmann, Nuit’, Aluminium Dye Sublimation, 80 X 120 cm (32 X 48 inches), 2019. An avid Francophile, I have always been fascinated by the massive urban renovation program of Paris, my second home, carried out between 1853 and 1870 by Georges-Eugène Haussmann, aka Baron Haussmann, under the commission of Emperor Napoléon III. The architecture guidelines set forth by Baron Haussmann were also my guiding principles for building this huge, yet as friendly as possible spaceship. A closer and exploring look at the image would reveal that the spaceship above is similar in its structure to the city underneath and mirrors its straight ‘boulevards’, its lined up ‘Haussmann buildings’, its numerous ‘squares’ and huge ‘parks’, as well as its glowing lights. This latter was the prime reason for me to create this ‘Night’ version, on top of the former ‘Day’ version which is shown here as well. By painting both versions I simply wanted to highlight the fact that the beauty of ‘The City of Lights’ always prevails, day and night. I spent many of my adult years in Paris and fell in love with Edith Piaf’s immortal songs, of which one of the best known is 'Sous le Ciel de Paris'. In this song she sings: “Under the sky of Paris the birds of God come from all over the world… in the sky of Paris hope blooms.” These words echoed in my mind for years and finally not only have contributed the artwork’s title, but have also helped me to figure out how to compose this painting. My artworks are usually about uncanny compositions, featuring inconceivable, yet fantastic realities which are portrayed employing dazzling colors and razor-sharp details. These fantastic realities cannot happen in our real world but only within my mind and consequently in my computers, where they are conceived, designed, fashioned, textured, painted and finally photographed. In addition, I usually create my artworks by first producing a short footage around the painting's theme and then I choose one frame, which I later turn to be the final still artwork. The present painting is actually one frame that I have chosen among 250 frames that constitute the footage. It seems to me that the present artwork fairly represents my artistic practice. Finally, I wish to thank Wojtek for his beautiful aerial night photo of Paris [https://fshoq.com/].
