About The Artwork

I was always taught to be kind to nature, to be more respectful of Bhumi devi (the goddess of earth). This meant that growing up, I didn't mercilessly pluck flowers and thrash them on the ground like other 5-year-olds. I'd stand and admire them, at the most, I'd give them a tender touch and nothing more. As I grew up, the sight of fresh flowers flourishing in its own space, be it a waste-ridden marshland or odd places like paddy fields, not neatly trimmed gardens, brought me some of the greatest joys of my life. The other day, my mother who spends most of her days digging in the mud to replant her favorite variety of coconut saplings, was ecstatic to see her 2 years of trial and error with planting lotus saplings come to fruition. The shiny new pink lotus that persevered its way out from a makeshift pond shared by less attractive occupants like guppy fish and mosquitos took the breath of its admirers away. I had never seen a lotus up close. It was alive; its grandeur mocking me for looking so indifferent. This painting is a reference to that memory. We should all have that kind of grandeur in our lives.

At the moment I’m a product marketer at a tech start up based in south India. Since we’re not two dimensional beings trapped in 9-5s, I’m also a portrait photographer and a line artist. My head is always drowning in thoughts of how I could photograph this person or draw that skyline. So post 5 P.M., I bury myself in my drawing pad to unfold the complexities life throws at us using lines and a pencil.
