About The Artwork

‘The Orange Rider’, Aluminum Dye Sublimation, 95 X 121 cm (38 X 48 inches), 2020. One of the masterpieces of Jan Wijnants, a Dutch Golden Age painter, is 'Hilly Landscape with a Rider on a Country Road' (painted 1655-1684). It is today part of the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam. As soon as I saw this work I knew that I wish to implement on it a few of my computer graphics programs: The same spaceship that is hovering over Paris in our century (please see my works ‘Sous le Ciel de Paris, Hommage à Georges-Eugène Haussmann, Jour’ and ‘Sous le Ciel de Paris, Hommage à Georges-Eugène Haussmann, Nuit’) did the same over the Netherlands back in the 17th century... A spaceship that is hovering above us in the sky, is considered a fantastic reality whether it occurs in the 21st century or back in the 17th century. Since Wijnants’ painting title is about the rider, I decided to continue along the same concept and concentrate on the rider, my way. Even though the Eighty Years’ War took place years before Wijnants painted his artwork, I imagined the rider as William I Prince of Orange, being armed with an orange power by an extraordinary force, in his revolt against Philip II of Spain. Painting my spaceship on Jan Wijnants’ 17th century artwork, I tried to preserve its original characteristics, so that my additions blend with Wijnants’ work as smoothly as possible. To this end, I followed a few guidelines: minimal modifications to the original creation, adherence to the original colors and tones, allegiance to Wijnants’ overall scene such as casting shadows and application of the same paint cracks time marks. Nevertheless, there are some exceptions, notably the addition of a conspicuous orange ray which is radiated from the spaceship’s body, and the use of several mist and translucency techniques. I wish to thank the Rijksmuseum for authorizing me to use Jan Wijnants’ painting.
