I conceived the SMITHON 45 years ago. The design is part of the fifth variable of my Progressive Polygons - Five Variables. Therefore, it is also part of my “Polygonum Progredi, (Progressive Polygons) an opus comprised of more than 300 original, pencil drawings, and subsequent numerous digital vectorized versions and treatments. “Polygonum Progredi” was born out of a socio-political philosophy I embraced at the time, exemplified by my phrase: ‘None, One, Some, Many, and All’. The SMITHON is a summation of the Typological Variable of my “Smithon Morphology”, a compendium, which turns the original pair of designs, the Parent group, inside-out. To keep my personal opinions out of it, I coloured it with a random colour sequence. Foremost in my mind was that those first pair of images represents the guy-wires supporting the universe, and their final recombined, inverted version represents the fuel that powers the universe. For viewers wishing a deeper meaning it might help to realize I suspect our emotions have evolved from a template which detonates and distributes that fuel throughout the universe. It also may be that Science is currently confirming the mathematical aspirant to the SMITHON, the Higgs boson.
