About The Artwork

The inspiration for this exotic digital print grew after I cancelled a premium 30 day free trial from a well known online global marketing company. I can't resist a good pun, hence the title: Amazonian Prime. I decided to play around using images of Amazonian birds and mammals to create the prime number pattern. This print depicts numbers 1 to 30 (after all it was a 30 day free trial!) using images of a single bird or animal for primes 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29. Non-prime numbers are represented by the group of prime factors that make up the number. So for instance, prime number 2 is a single toucan and non-prime 4 has two toucans representing its factors (2x2=4). This way, all the numbers up to 30 are represented by images of Amazonian birds and mammals. The only exception is number 1, which is a rainforest. This is also the backdrop for all the numbers as every number can be divided by 1. So, a very familiar premium service transformed into one of my prime number artworks.

Born 1953 in the UK. Paul Ashwell produces striking abstract paintings and prints. Inspired by repeated journeys, geology, music and numbers, his background as a skilled printmaker also influences his work. Much of his work is created by superimposing layers - using plaster, tissue, newsprint and paint to bring out or obscure previous layers. He often uses gloss and matt to give different appearances in different light and from different angles. Paul's facination with number and pattern is a reoccuring theme. His Prime Marks is a good example of this. http://tinyurl.com/pzykw2m http://paulashwell.co.uk http://paulashwell.co.uk/prime
