There is a sense of primal, ghostly forces at work, as in the lower half of the image, imprisonment, death and decay reign, from which the strange haunting forms of the lowly rise. The idea being that the order of things will, at some point be reversed, with all that is consigned to be base and useless returning to reclaim what has been usurped.
