#11 Print

#11 is the "inner demon" of addiction. My life at the time of making this peice was scattered, unsure, dark, lonely, defeated, and numb. I took a blank canvas on a 3 month long, drug induced journey through Los Angeles, which involved long metro rides to destinations without a purpose, and nowhere to comfortably call home, and started grabbing materials where i could to add on to the canvas along the way; the blank canvas itself has been through a lot. At first I used pastels that were gifted to me by a friend to create the body of #11; this was its birth, an explosion of human expression. I Then bought charcoal, and surrounded the figure in a dark dry void to express that the figure has an intense vivid beauty within, but is incapable of noticeing it. Thats when I "borrowed" black and white guache from someone i met and added the hand, and facial features to the figure with the idea of a colored pantomime in mind. The hand and dark facial features represent the numbing of all of its senses due to its very own addiction; which is candy. It holds a lollipop that it has given an abundance of energy and attention towards. Finally I used leftover oil to provide it with hair, and what seems to be a sonic eye; these are simply personality enhancers that I had no initial focus toward. Now this physical manifestation of addiction is stained on this canvas in an attempt to help someone towards their recovery in addiction, or to prevent someone from becoming an addict. #11 is a journey many travel, but without the pain. Its imprisonment is a eternal purgatory created in an attempt to find freedom.
