About The Artwork

Acrylic on board. This piece is the first in a series exploring the place of a landscape in the modern era. Throughout the world we live in places that are indelibly touched by humanity. There seems that there is no place where our mark has not been left. As a token gesture we have set aside parks and natural places for use or consumption to give us a sense that these places still exist. But by setting these places aside we are ultimately leaving a mark on them. Hemmed in on every side, criss-crossed by bridges and highways, we have turned our natural places into a commodity. To get to the places that an artist who wants to paint and landscape may find inspiration, we may travel hours and hundreds of kilometers. We have travelled through nothing but private property to find, at last, "public property." In a world of over 7 billion, how can there truly be public property? These places may feel deserted when we arrive there, with no place to pitch a tent, no water nearby. We have paid in money to get there, but ultimately we have paid in effort and sweat. That is the only thing keeping more people away. I have lived in places where nature is highly valued, among people who have a similar mindset, and what one finds is that going into nature can feel as busy as walking in a city park. My question: is the world already too crowded? What does it mean to share property as a society when every last thing is privately owned? What does access to this mean? This series is also a response to the level of anti-aestheticism that exists in contemporary art. My aim is to couple two creative elements of painting, the piece and its title, to express a level of social commentary which is generally absent from traditional landscape painting. My aim is also to show that an object can be traditionally aesthetically pleasing while still expressing something important, which I find in the our jaded art world is unfortunately non-existent. More to come.
