This is the second in a series of interiors I painted inspired by the rooms in which Matisse set his portraits. I love his use of color and the layered patterning he used in his representations of spaces. I find the idea of a comfortable chair in a beautiful space to be so appealing, just a little personal place in which to be by one's self. This particular room was inspired by my favorite Matisse painting in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a piece entitled "Tea" in which the artists model, daughter, and dog relax in the garden of his Parisian home, his painting is such a lush, verdant rendering of the moment and he so effectively inserts the viewer into the painting that I always find myself lost inside his space when visiting LACMA. I wanted to build myself a space that connected me to that place, which is where the inspiration for this little painting emerged. This piece features a warm coral pink wingback chair with gilded legs, sitting upon a brightly colored Persian rug, against a wall rendered in softly moving blue toned pink and white. A gently waving emerald plant flanks the chair in a gold pot and the garden is shown outside the window.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
