‘A Short Drop' is part of a body of work which depicts a post-apocalyptic worldview which combines humanities fading presence with elements from nature to question how long man will live in respect to deep time. The piece asks if we are in a period of time where man has caused long-term damage to the Earth, what could the next epoch of time look like if it was a world beyond man? I also wanted to comment on the culpability of our actions against the environment for humans now and humans to come as more than ever we are at a time in history where we are able to glimpse into the future and understand the impact of our actions. The painting depicts a deep chasm with crumbling buildings and withered trees teetering on the edge, a train hangs out of an exposed subway tunnel and water gushes from burst sewage pipes. To create the painting I layered different colours of egg tempera onto a gesso primed board and used sand paper and engraving tools to draw into the surface, creating fine detail and loose abstract marks which reveal the different layers of egg tempera. This process is an unusual mix of spontaneous mark making and considered detail.

I studied painting at Norwich University of the Arts (BA HONS) and Glasgow School of Art (MLITT). My practice articulates a post-apocalyptic worldview that combines humanities fading presence with elements from nature to question how long man will live in respect to deep time and to comment on the culpability of our actions against the environment for humans now and humans to come. Recent work uses the traditional medium of egg tempera to create works which integrate illusionary drawing and painting techniques with abstract minimalist surfaces. When viewed collectively, my paintings form a complex web of signification, where bursts of detail, colour and abstract forms add to the overall atmosphere and meaning. I have exhibited widely in the UK and internationally in Helsinki, New York and China. I currently live and work in Glasgow.
