Winter “Falling Up” is a series of paintings created in response to the Yorkshire landscape. Jagger revisited the area where she grew up to explore the landscape from a new perspective. Her sketches and paintings focus on the flow of water through the landscape, metaphorically water transforming from cloud to rain, then river source to sea, representing one cycle of life. The elements at play suggest the force of nature and inevitable passing of time, the man-made architecture and objects on the landscape provide signposts to locations, time and a human scale. This painting is a direct response to landscape surrounding Malham, a village in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. Gordale Beck flows from Gordale Scar to Janet’s Foss and becomes the River Aire. “The fields which lead to Janet’s foss and Gordale Scar are literally the opening scene for any number of walks through the countryside. This “opening scene” can be quite misleading in terms of setting the tone for the day or journey. The elements can transform your experience of the landscape in moments. It is the energy and motion of nature which I have tried to recreate here, to provide the viewer with an experiential escape.”.
