ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Faces always tell a story. Living in Africa (South Africa) there is a beautiful sense of character and depth in seemingly ordinary people. I aim to express a level of honesty through my work. While maintaining a portion of realism, and an impressionist influence, colours and details flex, allowing underlying emotion to feed through. Being a little rough around the edges as a response to the observed ambiguities and inconsistencies of life and people means I aim to put my brush down just before a piece is complete. It’s never really finished, the destination is always beyond. I enjoy the immediacy and accessibility of acrylics and colour themes that convey feeling.

Experiences, feelings, thoughts, memories and ideas forever swirl inside me. A calm surface often disguises deeper currents. There is always a question on the back of an answer but I consider life, and every day, as a gift. The people that populate these places are the highlight, for all have beauty and are worthy of attention. Though how we allow the true self to shine through is not straight forward in a busy and noisy world. Visual expression and it’s underlying truth influence my approach. Being a little rough around the edges as a response to the observed ambiguities and inconsistencies of life means I aim to put my brush down just before a piece is complete. It’s never really finished, the destination is always beyond. I had the opportunity to grow up with a mother who was highly artistic. A gentle soul, yet tough enough to raise three children on her own, this meant she never found space for her artistic expression to flourish. However, the seed of creativity is powerful and has taken root in the family. My journey has mostly been along the path of graphic design, for print, digital and online. But the desire has always been there to shout beyond those walls. What is on the other side? What is on the other side? The journey into knowledge opens the way to more questions.
