About The Artwork
Painted as part of the 'Endangered' series. As we face the increasing need to conserve our planet’s biodiversity and in light of our own government’s inability to recognise animals as sentient beings, I see my art as nothing short of a deep expression of personal grievance. I seek to use art as a vehicle to raise awareness of the plight facing other species that cohabit our environment and to dispel the myth that our fate is somehow separate from theirs. My paintings are larger than life. They are meant to grab attention and focus on larger than life issues about how we conserve our natural environment of which we form an integral part. I try to convey a sense of emotion using the play of light and the impact of the creature’s expression conveyed through its eyes. The uniform size of the canvases is a levelling devise for the animals’ physical size. I hope that my paintings capture an almost imploring plea from my subjects for us to become more sensitive to their needs. We can and must do more.

Steve Nayar is a painter living and working in Totnes, Devon. He originally trained to be an art teacher at Nottingham, Trent University but after graduating forged an award-winning career in design and advertising. He always had a love of animals and became concerned about the growing loss of the planet’s biodiversity. So that, in recent years he has focused on realistic paintings of endangered species in oils, often head and shoulders, gazing out at the viewer, sometimes imploring, sometimes challenging. His paintings are in private collections in the UK and overseas. He donates a portion of the sale to various conservation organisations and he has been a finalist at the prestigious Wildlife Artist of the Year every year, for the past five years. For several years he has been invited to teach in Mauritius and in 2022, gave a presentation at the prestigious Caudan Art Centre, in the capital Port Louis about raising awareness of wildlife through art. Steve is chair of his local art collective, Totnes and Dartington Open Studios.
