June 2018. This painting is one of a series made in response to the coalition bombing of Raqqa, Syria, in 2018, when civilian deaths were said to be a necessary cost of winning the war quickly. I made the paintings as impressions from images given global exposure on world news channels. I intentionally chose images with attractive aesthetic qualities, in order to provoke reflection on the transformation, and a dialogue with the viewer. At first glance, the paintings look like standard impressions of desert lands. Closer examination reveals grim skeletons of ruined cities, and wounded faces showing fear, defeat and anger – a premonition that bombing is not the end of the story.
