About The Artwork

A small, aesthetic old book came once to our home collection. Taking it, I immediately realized that it had its own special message, which I did not yet understand, but felt. The book was printed in 1857 in London. It had a signature, the stamp of the owner, and special handwritten notes on the pages. The title of the book was "A catalog of Exotic and indigenous Ferns Cultivated in British Gardens by John Smith". John Smith (1798–1888), an English botanist and the first curator of Kew Gardens, classified with special love and meticulousness all the fern specimens available to him. The author's gift signature dedicated to another well-known connoisseur and researcher of orchids gives this book a particularly inspiring feeling. I was curious to scrutinize each species of fern that is in the catalog. There are a lot of them and they are all special, beautiful, and mystical. So there was a desire to create a series of paintings called "John Smith's Ferns". Those are not botanical sketches, but emotional reflections on each single fern variety.
