About The Artwork

“Falling Up” is a series of paintings created in response to the Yorkshire landscape. Jagger revisited the area where she grew up to explore the landscape from a new perspective. Her sketches and paintings focus on the flow of water through the landscape, metaphorically water transforming from cloud to rain, then river source to sea, representing one cycle of life. The elements at play suggest the force of nature and inevitable passing of time, the man-made architecture and objects on the landscape provide signposts to locations, time and a human scale. This painting was developed from sketches made close to Bretton Park, looking out toward the lights of Sheffield. It contains found objects (crows feathers), the feathers inspired Jagger to review Ted Hughes’ poem, Crow. “While developing sketches I listened to a recital of Ted Hughes’ poem Crow. The painting seemed to resonate with the poem. Day crossing over to night, the elements all descending and creating a rainbow, like a colourful iris around "A black doorway:The eye’s pupil", the portal sitting between the abstract rural and the twinkliing lights of civilisation on the horizon, once more evoking the poem "...sun to sun, he found this home.’ The Inclusion of two crows in flight was intended to tie these ideas and worlds together. The artwork is created on Saunders Waterford, 100% cotton, mould made, acid free, 300lb paper. The painting has a Windsor and Newton Professional matt varnish finish.
