About The Artwork

It's hard to forget the racial turmoil in Melbourne when I studied there in the '90s. On one side of the road, people were picketing and their signs read "Asians, go home!" One of them shook an angry fist in my face. So I crossed the road to the other side and some people wrote with chalk on the ground, "Asians we love you, stay here!" Yet a couple of streets later, the signs read, "Asians go home!" That night I went to the best hot dog stand and while waiting in line, heard a huge roaring noise behind me. My instinct was to just duck. Three young white men threw rotten eggs and because us Asian students all ducked, the eggs hit the hot dog seller in the face. I offered him my handkerchief. The hot dog was delicious as I watched the euphoric picketing downstairs, outside my window. Thank you Pauline Hanson.

"In the end, all we need is Empathy." Mikael Teo (born 1972) creates Figurative/ Neo-expressionism works of art with acrylic and mixed media. This usually leads him to dark memories where regret and remorse prevail in the recesses of his mind. His drive and passion come from an incessant need to craft his own unique visual language and identity. His brushstrokes and Chinese words drip with immediacy and rawness which connect you to his the very essence of his personality. It's not so much what he wants to convey that matters, but what he needs you to feel. And while in no particular order, Mikael hopes you will take away from his art, love, respect and above all, empathy.
