About The Artwork

Inspired by the beautiful streets in South Bombay this painting is inspired by a photograph I took while on a cab ride. The beautiful sunny afternoon vibe with warm and cool colours, sharp lines and smooth curves is naturally aesthetic. The play of opposites in the composition give voice to the dynamism and vibrancy of the place even on a hot afternoon. Watercolour is the most suitable media for capturing scenes characterised by their ephemerality, and this painting illustrates the power and promise of the medium when put to such use. The work is 20.5x15.5 inches, and has no borders. It is painted on 100% cotton, 270GSM, acid free paper of archival quality using artist grade paints that are light-fast and won't fade or dull over time.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website www.Middlebrowse.com
