Painted on location "en plein air" in two sessions. The low angle viewpoint and the bright sun and strong shadows was what attracted to me to paint this impressive late 18th century windmill. As it was a day for sunny spells it made this painting on location rather difficult. As I had to knock in the tricky curved shadow of the sails on the tower when they appeared. The one positive aspect of the clouds was to break up the dominant form of the white tower. The suggested figures on the right centre give a sense of scale. Ballycopeland Windmill is the only remaining working windmill in East Down. It was built in the late 18th or early 19th century and was worked until the First World War when it fell into disrepair. It was gradually restored between 1950 and 1978 to full working order. Acrylic on Board
