About The Artwork

As an artist from the Midwest, I focus on doing paintings of old barns. Barns have always served a purpose as functional structures. They were never intended to tell a story. However, old barns do just that. They evoke a sense of nostalgia in people that is hard to define. Years of hard use and exposure to the elements build distinct characters in each barn. As an artist, I like to enhance certain components of a barn that better emulate the story of that barn’s existence. The inspiration for my barn paintings comes from Regionalist artists and mainly Grant Wood and Marvin Cone. Both lived and worked in the part of eastern Iowa where I live.

Why barn paintings? The Barn Series: Immortalizing an Icon No other structure symbolizes the American Midwest quite as powerfully as the family barn. For those of us who grew up here, barns were as perennial as the trees. The heart of every homestead, barns were no less than church steeples — sublime, time-worn landmarks that charted our journeys along winding streets and gravel roads. But today, these structures are being lost. Many were destroyed by the derecho of 2020 and others are threatened by new development and high preservation costs. My barn series is an attempt to celebrate the survivors and pay visual tribute to those that are gone.
