About The Artwork

The work is a metaphor depicted as a city that comes to life. Applications of paper, cardboard, twine and rice paper adorn the canvas. It has been transcribed in Japanese part of the Lotus Sūtra, which is considered one of the most important Buddhist scriptures, which has greatly influenced the Mahayana tradition throughout East Asia. His central message is that Buddhahood - a state of absolute happiness, freedom from fear and all illusions - is inherent in all life. In particular, in this sutra it is stated that all living beings possess the nature of Buddha and that there are no categories of people who cannot achieve Buddhahood in the present life. The supernatural stories told in the 28 chapters emphasize the Lotus Sutra itself, the Buddha, in order to encourage the practice of the bodhisattva in the world, which constitutes the Buddha's Way to salvation.

Enza Varvara was born and lives in Italy. She is an artist, set designer and director. Lately her works and her research are influenced by eastern philosophies and aesthetics, Zen and Taoist, which she uses symbolically to make clear the most inexplicable notions, connect to nature and the true essence of things. Instead, the use of eastern languages and different scripts serves to show the communication problems and the complexity of a world with many facets. Therefore, through Asian thought, the artist, with her art, wants to bring the user closer to nature and to his own inner spirit.
