ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Black Pearl is a minimalistic rendering of a gorgeous black feminine whose grandioseness flourished within the spectrum of background hues combined with the form. “Beauty is a vertical well. it dives into the light a wide, vast and glittery pipeline of yellow. Beauty is a solution to problems that undermine us, irrespective of their origins, skin or philosophical. In an interview, Gbemileke Adekunle gives a first indication to this painting he just painted, called ′′ Black Pearl ": When I feel down, all I have to do is look at my cats and creating art. ′′ He's right: cats are beautiful, and Black pearl much more beneficial than a valium tablet or a Colombian joint! He smiles and handes me a minimalist text on a piece of paper where it is about ′′ the splendor of the (black) woman, fulfilled in this yellow-dominated spectrum." Here, that same yellow as Ballo uses, and that ochre clear that Olivia Mae Pendergast (Kenya) bathes these peaceful figures. Same stretching, same filiform beauty, which opens like a wing. The woman is sitting, legs lying, on a dotted background of blue bees... and the feeling comes from absolute fullness. This morning of painting, Gbemileke Adekunle opens a door in an apartment that light floods. Until this moment, despite the clarity, it's a gloomy morning, bathing his eyes. Until that second, when cats appear on the floor, in the indolence of their stretching. Up to that solar radius that barges the space of a golden train. That's it, he can start the painting and smile at the day that begins.” Roger Calmé (ZO mag ')

Gbemileke’s studio practice revolves on ranging issues from solitude to the complexity of heritage.
“Connecting with people’s emotions and minds as a visual artist is dutiful, invoking the elements through engaging and provocative representations is fundamental to human existence and development.”
His series titled Dementia gives an expository about agoraphobic inclination of the artist and also convey sense of being suspended in time and space exploring menace between the physical and mental state.
Gbemileke works is described as expressionist paintings with fewer recent works leaning towards abstract expressionism. His primary medium is acrylic with juxtaposition of oil pastel and charcoal to strike textural harmonies. “My art is incomplete without the use of oil pastel and charcoal, that gives nostalgic bring-back of my childhood where I used burnt wood and crayons for my drawings.
Gbemileke currently lives and works in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria.
