About The Artwork

This Black-headed Gull came very close to me on the north-west coast of England. As with many of my paintings, I like the way bright sun light focusses me on the subject, seeing little beyond. I have emphasised the beauty of the pattern flow in the bird’s feathers and in the wood. I wanted the contrast between the dark shadows and brightly lit feathers to bring it alive. I always enjoy giving the eye or eyes reflections to make it life-like. It’s eye somehow gives it character. I find that Acrylic paint on canvas makes it possible to emphasise the beautiful strong colours. I paint on all four edges of the deep-edge stretched canvas. This helps to give a three-dimensional quality to the work, so I recommend a tray frame which allows the edges to be seen, or it can be hung with no frame.

I love the natural world. I was born and raised in the south of England, but have since moved steadily north. I now live in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Yorkshire, a perfect base for observing and painting the natural world. I have a background in graphic design and illustration for book publishers in London and Bristol, but I am now focussed on painting using acrylics on canvas. I am combining my love of studying birds and animals with a life-long passion for drawing and painting human portraits and the natural world around me. I am fascinated and calmed by the effect of strong sunlight on a subject, either in pools of light across a landscape or up close, highlighting a subject. I am enjoying experimenting with using household implements along with artist brushes to spread, stipple and work paint for desired effects. Whilst my design work has been available in book shops up and down the country for a long time, I am a new-comer in presenting my acrylic artworks on canvas to collectors. I paint the things that I like looking at. My hope is that others might be moved by these artworks too.
