ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I was inspired to make this image based on my interest in literature. I found a similar image in a vintage childrens colouring book from the 1950's and produced my own version in monochrome. I hope book lovers will enjoy this small picture and perhaps be reminded of the bittersweet experience of reading a favourite novel, when you arrive at the final page and realise the experience is almost over. I used wet on wet acrylic and a subdued monochrome palette which seems to reflect the rather anxious look of the book, perhaps it has been neglected on the shelf for too long.

James Lang (b.1987, London) currently lives and works in London having recently returned from Beijing after almost 5 years. He graduated from Liverpool School of Art in 2011 and Camberwell College of Art in 2013 with an MA in Illustration. Living in China was a transformative experience. The distance made him feel closer to the culture he left behind. This led to a series of works inspired by British history and culture. His paintings are inspired by medieval art, literature and a fondness for childhood cartoons and vintage colouring book images. The paintings are often thickly layered, ranging from brightly coloured pop art to blurry monochrome images, Varying in sentiment between innocence and satire.
