About The Artwork

This large blue painting features a tall Greek amphora with a pattern of Greek maidens on its belly, a bouquet of proteas, berries and leaves rests in the vase which itself sits upon a deep teal and green Matisse-inspired tablecloth patterned with a loose fuchsia flower design. The background of the piece is painted in ultramarine blue with hints of purple, the brush strokes are clear and painterly, adding texture and movement to the piece. This painting is one within a series inspired by the Ancient Greek Ceramics at the Getty Villa, and in this case also by some sketches John Keats created around the writing of his rather wonderful Ode on a Grecian Urn. The work is painted on cradled birch board. It will ship lovingly wrapped and placed in a box.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
