Inspired by M.C. Escher in a modern, unorthodox puzzle-piecing way... this piece is from a series of work I call the "Freedom Series”. “Freedom” Artist’s Series Statement: Birds are content creatures. In all the business they do in a day, they do so with playful: awareness, determination and daring. It is through their tireless model I find inspiration. ‘Freedom’ is a series of works that express, through the form of birds, my struggle as wife, mother and artist. Unorthodox inspiration from M.C. Escher explores confined spaces, while symbolic expressions of waiting and/or suppression, and passages of ‘breaking free’ fill my work. The element of color saturation and material play a subtle, expressive part to my work. Wood or fiber=present reality, gold or silver=hope of the future, resin or wax=containment; degree of color saturation=degree of freedom. This series is primarily expressed through encaustic collage or watercolor. Watercolor and colored pencil, completed 2019 www.MONgallery.us

Growing up on a ‘dead end’ road in the county; Ohio-native artist, Jennifer Sowders, grew up spending a lot of time studying nature and its indelible thread is noted within her body of work. Jennifer is a 1994 BFA graduate from the Columbus College of Art and Design. She is a Trustee and Signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, Associate of The National Watercolor, American Watercolor and National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Societies; on the board of the Fostoria Area Arts Council and member of the Ohio Art League, as well as many local organizations. She gained entrance into The 2020 National Watercolor Society’s (NWS) Annual Member Show, as well as NWS 2020 “50 Stars” Exhibition. The latter being quite an honor as two artworks were chosen from each state-level watercolor society to represent their state. Her work has been awarded in both the 2022 Ohio State Fair, and the 2022 Ohio Watercolor Society show, as well as many Juried shows throughout Ohio. She continues to be accepted into National and International shows; recently winning a 2021 Pentel Artist's Spotlight and a 2021 Bryn Du Art Show award. Jennifer is in the Fall 2022 Artists Magazine "AcrylicWorks 9: The Best of Acrylic" as an Honorable Mention winner. She is currently represented by the Toledo Museum of Art's Collector Corner.
